Among other things, if you have been a part of Staunton's Disc Golf Club at all over the past 10 years you probably knew Will. He was a very compassionate person that loved people, loved playing disc golf, and loved telling stories. Will originally helped design and build the Kiwanis Disc Golf Course in Staunton, VA; and although pieces of the course have been redesigned over the years, his love and dedication were always apparent on the course. He spent countless hours each week, every year mowing the fairways and cleaning up the course so that everyone had a place to enjoy playing some disc golf.
Last September, Will was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. After battling for several months, he passed from this life to the next on March 13th of this year. More details of his story are contained within journal entries that Cindy, Will, and others posted on Will's CaringBridge site throughout his battle. This past Sunday (April 3rd), a Celebration of Life service was held to honor and celebrate Will Grant's life. Although I was unable to personally attend, I have heard several accounts from others that were there that it was a beautiful and touching service. (Click "Read More" for more)

This weekend, a few club members traveled to the Richmond area to compete at the K'Crushka tournament held at Camp Hanover. The course is a private course that has a mix of wooded and open (but technical) holes. Saturday was the AM day(except for Advanced AM division) while the Pros and Advanced AMs played Sunday.
The weather on Saturday morning brought rain which lasted most of the day and therefore grip difficulties. Jonathan Britts didn't let that discourage him or the fact that he went OB on hole 1 both rounds, he fought through it and tied for 9th in the Intermediate division. Sunday was a beautiful cool Spring day for disc golf although the wind definitely added a bit of difficulty especially on the open holes. Both Ned Gearing and Courtney Biel competed in a field of 24 for the Advanced AM division. Ned put together a respectable 959 rated 1st round which earned him a tie for 2nd place and a spot on the lead card going into the 2nd/final round. Courtney "McNoPutt" Biel managed a 931 rated first round and found himself in 6th place and on the 2nd card for the 2nd round, but with only 5 shots separating him and the leader... there was still hope. Ned and Courtney shot 923 and 932 rated final rounds. When all was said and done, Ned finished tied for 5th and Courtney taking 7th place. Some of you may have noticed that our previous site (stauntondiscgolf.com) had expired earlier this month. We contemplated renewing the site, but several factors lead to deciding not to do so; the main one being cost. Instead we have created this new site which is FREE, the only downside being that it is a "secondary" domain which is why it includes a '.weebly' in the URL (sawdiscgolf.weebly.com).
So give it a look and let us know what you think. We'll be continuing to improve on the website and add more info as we go. Information regarding this year's leagues and club will be posted shortly. Please help get the word about the new site. Thanks everyone, now lets go play some disc golf! |
