Rocktown always puts on a great disc golf tournament and this one looks to be no different. As of yesterday, there was $1400 in added cash(add still rising) which will be split between the Pros and AMs. The weather forecast is looking awesome... sunny, high of 79, and no chance of rain. There are still spots open, so get signed up.

The 2016 Roctown Classic will be held on June 18th at Westover Park. There will be 2 rounds of 18 holes instead of the full 21. Holes 9, 10, and 12 will not be played to help facilitate better flow on the course. I am signed up and definitely looking forward to this event. Get signed up now by going to the online registration page.
Chris Faunce did a great job at finding ways to honor Will Grant throughout the tournament. Will's signature island hole 16 was used, special trophies with funny disc golf sayings (seen in pic above) were handed out to division winners and used for other Will Grant style awards. Plastic flowers could be found throughout the course which was something that Will did often. The weather turned out pretty awesome for Saturday. Although the grass was wet in the morning, it didn't rain at all and the sun came out and dried everything up. We had 41 players come out to the tournament. There were several club members that joined in on the action as well. Ex-club member, Mitch Dickens finished 8th out of 9 in Open. In a division of 13 Advanced AMs, Ned Gearing finished 2nd, Chris Faunce tied for 3rd, Courtney Biel 5th. Out of 9 Advanced Grandmasters, Roy Carter and Cliff Watson tied for 5th while Todd Ashworth finished one shot back in 9th. Richard Haelen played his heart out in the Rec division but all he earned was the most number of throws. Full tournament results can be found on the PDGA Event site. We would like to thank everyone that came out to the tournament yesterday; would also like to thank Chris Faunce that made the tournament happen and also did a ton of course work to get the course ready; would like to thank Wilderness Adventure, who donated some sweet merchandise used as prizes; would like to thank Stan Juchno, David Whitcomb, Ned Gearing, and any others that helped out at the tournament. Below you will find some pictures and gifs from some of tournament action, complements of David Whitcomb: This will give everyone a chance to go practice the course these next couple days to help prepare for the competition on Saturday. All divisions will be playing the same layout. As you can see in the above picture... there are a mix of Red and Blue tees that will be used. There are also a couple regular holes being skipped and a couple temp holes to replace them. Hole 7 will be skipped and the "new" hole 10 will be skipped. The 1st temp hole will be 10A which will be similar to the old hole 10 that got taken away; we will tee off from its gravel teepad and a temp basket will be placed near where the basket used to be. This temp basket will not be set up until the morning of the tournament. The 2nd temp hole will be 16A. Basically hole 16 is being split into 2 separate holes. Hole 16 will be the short hole from red tee to yellow basket then hole 16A will play from a temp tee in the flat area near the softball field fence to 16's orange basket.
This layout is mostly set in stone but as always, subject to change. *Updated with changes on 5/5/16 @ 11:25pm
Come on out to this Saturday's PDGA tournament to help honor Will "Carson" Grant. Will passed away this past March but will never be forgotten; he certainly left his mark throughout the community including the Staunton disc golf club. Check out the earlier blog post for more info on Will. For those that knew Will, you will notice some familiar things throughout this tournament. One of his favorite holes, number 16 (red to yellow), will be in play. Out-of-bounds will "be in play" on several holes including the pond hole. Plastic flowers will be located on a few holes which is something that Will always liked to do. There will also be Will Grant style trophies for the winners similar to what is seen in the following photos: We also [jokingly] thought about providing MP3 files of stories told by Will to all the players that would be required to be listened to during tournament play.
Club Memberships will also be on sale during the tournament check-in. This year we are selling memberships at a "Will Grant Special" $10. You will receive a club tag to be used in club tag rounds. We hope to see you on Saturday! Tournament info found at this link and on our Facebook page. Although these fairies have not been seen, the evidence they left behind can be. These fairies apparently have been readying the course for the PDGA tourney on Saturday. Here is some of what was found.... Hole 5 in the Rocks pin is ready to punish players with some roll-aways - Hole 16a entrance to the green BEFORE and AFTER Staunton Parks and Rec have also been mowing the open areas so that is a relief since the grass on some of the holes was pretty tall. I hope everyone is looking forward to Saturday!
Weather is shaping up to provide us with a beautiful day for a tournament on Saturday... High around 75 degrees, and mostly sunny skies. Below is the tournament flyer with all the info. Go register! Also, if anyone is free throughout this week to help with course cleanup, Chris Faunce would love the help to get the course ready. His contact info is on the flyer. Online Registration also available at DiscGolfScene.
May 7th is only two Saturday's away and I only see 12 people registered. I know that many wait until the last minute to register but I urge you to get yourself registered now if you plan to attend; it greatly helps in the planning for the event. For more info on the tournament, check out the original post or the event page on Facebook.
Club members Jonathan Britts and Courtney Biel played in the Battle in the Blue Ridge tournament held at Walnut Creek Park near Charlottesville this past weekend. It was a 2-day, 3 round tournament, with each round being a different layout. Saturday's weather proved to be challenging with 10-20 mph winds with gusts up to 40 mph.
Britts finished in a 3-way tie for 8th place out of 17 in the Intermediate division while Biel finished in a 3-way tie for 10th place out of 22 in the Advanced division. Both finished well enough in their respective divisions to receive a small payout. To view the complete results go to the PDGA tournament page. The following picture was the BIG TALK of the weekend... This was the result of a putt from Courtney from about 18 feet; it hit dead center chains, bounced back onto the rim of the cage, and slid off the side of the basket before coming to rest as you see here in the picture below. The PDGA C-Tier event will be held on May 7th at the Kiwanis Disc Golf Course. See the flyer below for more details and how to register. UPDATE: Online Registration option added through DiscGolfScene! Click the link to take you to the registration page.
