December brings many people's favorite time of year. Of course there is Christmas, but a close second to Christmas is the BRAWL. If you haven't heard of it before, it is a series of events during the winter throughout the Blue Ridge area; hence the BRAWL (Blue Ridge Area Winter League).
This year the league will be starting the first Saturday in December. Check out the below flyer for more info on the whens, wheres, and whats.

Yesterday, while club member Jonathan Britts was watching recorded video coverage of Wednesday's 2nd round of Pro Worlds, he spotted a disc that appeared to have our club stamp. He messaged me and I confirmed that it is a club stamp that we used 3 years ago. Logan Bowers from Tennessee was the one spotted using the pictured disc which appears to be a metal flake champion firebird. Go SAW!!!
Rocktown always puts on a great disc golf tournament and this one looks to be no different. As of yesterday, there was $1400 in added cash(add still rising) which will be split between the Pros and AMs. The weather forecast is looking awesome... sunny, high of 79, and no chance of rain. There are still spots open, so get signed up.
The 2016 Roctown Classic will be held on June 18th at Westover Park. There will be 2 rounds of 18 holes instead of the full 21. Holes 9, 10, and 12 will not be played to help facilitate better flow on the course. I am signed up and definitely looking forward to this event. Get signed up now by going to the online registration page.
While Chris Faunce was doing some final weedeating on the course for tomorrow's tournament, his weedeater broke. If anyone has a weedeater and time to do some weedeating on the course today we would GREATLY appreciate it. Holes 14 and 15 are all that is left to be done. Please comment (on Facebook post or SAW website) if you are able to rescue us. Thanks in advance!
Come on out to this Saturday's PDGA tournament to help honor Will "Carson" Grant. Will passed away this past March but will never be forgotten; he certainly left his mark throughout the community including the Staunton disc golf club. Check out the earlier blog post for more info on Will. For those that knew Will, you will notice some familiar things throughout this tournament. One of his favorite holes, number 16 (red to yellow), will be in play. Out-of-bounds will "be in play" on several holes including the pond hole. Plastic flowers will be located on a few holes which is something that Will always liked to do. There will also be Will Grant style trophies for the winners similar to what is seen in the following photos: We also [jokingly] thought about providing MP3 files of stories told by Will to all the players that would be required to be listened to during tournament play.
Club Memberships will also be on sale during the tournament check-in. This year we are selling memberships at a "Will Grant Special" $10. You will receive a club tag to be used in club tag rounds. We hope to see you on Saturday! Tournament info found at this link and on our Facebook page. Although these fairies have not been seen, the evidence they left behind can be. These fairies apparently have been readying the course for the PDGA tourney on Saturday. Here is some of what was found.... Hole 5 in the Rocks pin is ready to punish players with some roll-aways - Hole 16a entrance to the green BEFORE and AFTER Staunton Parks and Rec have also been mowing the open areas so that is a relief since the grass on some of the holes was pretty tall. I hope everyone is looking forward to Saturday!
Good evening everyone. Some of you already know but for those that don't, Courtney and his wife are leaving tomorrow (Friday) for a week to go on a 77 mile backpacking trip. Why am I posting this? Well, Courtney(myself) is the one that maintains the website and posts these blog messages and therefore will be unable to do so for the next week. I do have scheduled posts that will go out on Sunday and Thursday as reminders for the Tag League rounds but any other news, updates, results, etc will be posted once I return. FYI - on our way to where we will be backpacking, I will be stopping in to play the Harmon Hills Disc Golf Course in Falls Branch, TN which I hear is EPIC!
Club members Jonathan Britts and Courtney Biel played in the Battle in the Blue Ridge tournament held at Walnut Creek Park near Charlottesville this past weekend. It was a 2-day, 3 round tournament, with each round being a different layout. Saturday's weather proved to be challenging with 10-20 mph winds with gusts up to 40 mph.
Britts finished in a 3-way tie for 8th place out of 17 in the Intermediate division while Biel finished in a 3-way tie for 10th place out of 22 in the Advanced division. Both finished well enough in their respective divisions to receive a small payout. To view the complete results go to the PDGA tournament page. The following picture was the BIG TALK of the weekend... This was the result of a putt from Courtney from about 18 feet; it hit dead center chains, bounced back onto the rim of the cage, and slid off the side of the basket before coming to rest as you see here in the picture below. |
